Goulburn Valley – Victoria – Australia

Goulburn Valley is a wine zone that stretches from North Melbourne to the border of New South Wales

The zone is vast and rich in diversity. My visit was mainly focussed on the area between Nagambie and Murchison. The wineries that I visited all demonstrated to have products with a good harmony – from the extremely small ‘12 Acres’ to the sizeable ‘Tabilik’.  There was a good variety available and I was surprised to find Marsanne and Gamay hidden in the plains and hills.

Per finire vorrei menzionare the 12 acres winery.

Businesses of note are: ‘Tabilik’, a large company with a 150-year history that still maintains a balance between commercial enterprise and a family business. ‘The brave goose’, in particular for its Gamay that had a rich strawberry and cherry scent that was a bit too intense at the nose but could be nice with a strawberry tart and custard. ‘Rocky Passes’ a biodynamic winery with a Syrah that could teach other wineries how to make a robust, balanced and complex Syrah with a good price. ‘The Murchison winery’  that manages to produce a commercial wine without ending up with a product that is too metallic or chemical tasting.  The final winery I would like to mention is the ’12 Acres’ winery, an extremely small winery without a vineyard that was created and is managed by a single person. I was surprised by how he had developed his wine into such complex product. The wines were studded with chocolate, tobacco and china root. Aged in oak each wine was easily differentiated from the next with their own particular aroma and taste. The prices were amazingly low for the quality of the product – I only hope that they survive long enough for me to order some wine in the future.

Here is a scene of perfect tranquillity; a fire, a bottle of wine and the company of someone special.
